Interview Starring: Buttercup Baby

There are so many great Cloth Diaper Retailers on the internet today! It is not very often that you have a personal connection with the owner of one of these retailers! Audrey runs Buttercup Baby, and believe it or not, I met her on a Cloth Diaper Twitter Party! Come to find out, her store is based in Connecticut, where I live! I was so excited to connect with someone so close!! Buttercup baby offers a wide variety of Cloth Diaper brands and accessories, and she is always having sales and coupons!!!

Audrey graciously offered to answer a few interview questions that I put together. One because I was curious how she got started and two because I thought you readers might be curious as well!! So here it goes!

Did you always know that you wanted to Cloth Diaper your Children? No, not at all!! Even a year ago I would have said no to this!  I guess I kind of had it on my mind when we found out we were pregnant with Sophia (my only child, 6 months old) because parents touring the daycare I worked at asked about them. What really shocked me was the price of disposables when I started my baby registry. I think that's what really turned me. We had a nice size stash before she was even here.

How did you first get involved in Cloth Diapering or Learn about it? I worked in Infant Daycare for years before I got pregnant- I threw away a lot of sposies and didn't know any different! Then, towards the end of me working there, a few couples touring the place asked if we would take cloth diapers. I was really shocked. I was under the impression that a cloth diaper was a burp cloth and a pin!

What was the first diaper you purchased? At the same time (wasn't sure which I was going to like) a BumGenius 4.0 and a FuzziBunz one size :-)

Your Favorite Cloth Diaper? Rumparooz!!! I love the prints and the design of the double gussets.

Essential (Must-Have) Cloth Diaper Accessory? Good laundry detergent. Cloth Diapering is no fun unless you have this by your side. One of the reasons I only stock Ruby Moon detergent (despite being offered to sell others) is because I went through TEN other brands before finding something that worked for me personally. We have extremely hard well water and Ruby is the only thing that not only gets my diapers clean but makes them smell DIVINE!

Snaps or Aplix? I'm a Snaps girl.

How did you come up with the name Buttercup Baby for your store? Great question! I really liked the idea of going with something earthy, from nature, that grows (like a baby does!) and I wanted the logo to look clean and simple. I thought the yellow/green combo was perfect for all those! I like buttercups, they're a cute flower, and then it helps of course that there is that catchy old song "Build me up, Buttercup, Baby" by the Foundations :-)

What made you want to start your own store/business? Once Sophia was born, I realized she didn't really take up as much time as I imagined. Of course, it's a delicate balance and she is my top priority, but I needed to do SOMETHING. A project. A hobby. And when I fell for cloth diapering I fell HARD. I wanted to make a difference somehow, but I also needed some kind of income AND be able to stay home with my daughter!

Future goals for Buttercup Baby? I would absolutely LOVE to own a brick & mortar store someday. There isn't anything like that around here and it would be so much fun to have cloth diapering 101 classes, etc!

Most unique feature of Buttercup Baby? Hmmm... it's not totally unique, but I try to go above and beyond with my giveaways, discounts and coupons. I feel like that gives me a competitive edge. My husband gets on my case about it sometimes ("aren't you going to make ANY profit???") but I LOVE making someone's day!

What do you like to do in your spare time (not cloth diaper related)? My husband and I are HUGE TV buffs... aka couch potatoes I suppose :-) We love finding new shows and having that be our "thing". We're currently watching over 20 series! Mostly crime dramedy, sci-fi, stuff like that. People would never guess it by looking at me!

You can also follower her on Twitter and Facebook!

  14. When I had my first baby in 1984, I had to have cloth diapers. I totally hated them. I understand, though, that cloth diaper manufacturers have really made improvements with them. So happy to hear that because the ones that I used were hard to clean, and kept my darling in a rash most of the time. Also, let it always leak all over me because the plastic pants were always a bit loose.

  18. I really like the interview. I still haven't used cloth diapers and I am nervous to buy anything. I have a disability and some buttons and snaps and such are near impossible for me to do. My dexterity and strength isn't great in my hands.

    1. I can understand how you would feel that way! A lot of the cloth diapers now come in velcro as well which may be a lot easier for you to use! I actually like the velcro/aplix ones for that reason...they are super easy!! You should check those out!! Thanks for stopping by too:-)If you have any further questions, just shoot me an e-mail at myclothdiaperstash@gmail.com

  19. I loved hearing how her cloth diaper business started. I have always wondered about going into business myself, but I have a feel I would be more into the buying part :)
Pasimonious Pash, we use a lot of aplix and actually prefer them over snaps. I feel like we can get a tighter fit on out skinny guys.

  23. I always love it when people answer the question, "what would you do if you weren't doing what you're doing right now? or if you won the lottery". If it's totally different, then I feel badly for them. It seems like Audrey is doing soemthing she loves. Good on her!

  31. Great interview. It is awesome to hear how one mom take on such a huge project and become a success. I think every town should have a cloth diaper store that offers "cloth diapering 101". So many people use sposies because they lack good information and/or have preconcieved ideas!
