Cloth Diapering 101: Pocket Diapers

When I first started researching Cloth Diapers for my little guy, I had no idea that there were different types of Cloth Diapers!! I was introduced to the Fuzzi Bunz  Pocket Diaper by a friends of mine. I just thought that all Cloth Diapers were the same...they were all Pocket Diapers! Boy did I have a lot to learn!! I wanted to write this post for those of you who are considering Pocket Cloth Diapers. It will hopefully give you some more information to help you choose the best type of Cloth Diaper for your family!

2 Components to a Pocket Diaper:

1) Outer Layer Made of Waterproof Material such as PUL that is sewn to an Inner Layer made out of materials such as Microfleece that keep the baby feeling dry.

2) An Absorbent Insert which is "stuffed" or placed inside the outer layer.

PRO's
  • Convenient and easy to use
  • Gives a Trim Fit
  • Dries quickly
  • You can easily change the "Insert" providing more or less absorbency
  • Available in super cute prints and colors
CON's
  • Tend to be a little more expensive than other Cloth Diapers
  • Must be washed after every use
  • Must be "stuffed" before they can be used which can take some time
  • Can be harder to rinse poo off because it can get caught in the liner creases
  • Piling may occur on the microfleece liner
  • Most are made from synthetic materials (polyester), so if you are looking for natural materials you will have to look a little harder
Important Things to Note:
  • You can buy Sized or Fitted Pocket Diapers (Newborn, S, M, L)
  • Closure can be Velcro (Aplix) or Snaps
  • They are often available in One Size (Ranging from 6 lbs to 30lbs). This is a more economical  option because they can be used from birth to potty training!

  1. I prefer pockets over all in ones because if you have stink issues, I think it is easier to work them out by running a wash load with just the inserts on the sanitize cycle and/or with bleach or vinegar. Then you don't have to worry about messing up your PUL and elastic. (I wash the actual pockets separately with a more gentle routine when stripping) So far this has worked well for me, but my stink issues haven't been from using rash cream either.

  2. i love pockets for daytime use, but we simply cannot make them work for nighttime. i think the way my son lays while he is sleeping, creates gaping at the legs because we always have leak issues (not because of saturation). we use fitteds for nighttime and no longer have issues.

  4. We used pockets with my first, but we have been using covers and flats or prefolds with our newest lo. I think I will look into getting some for daytime use. They are easy :)

  6. I love pocket diapers. They are by far, my fave. It did take me a while to find a good fit for my LO because he is so tall and slender but I couldn't imagine using anything else!

  8. I originally leaned towards prefering AIOs, but as I read more reviews, the more I think that pockets might be the better choice.

  9. I like pockets because they are so versatile, I love how you can add extra absorbency if you need for naps and night.

  12. We use pocket diapers (with snaps) and love them! My main concern before starting cloth diapers was having to stuff them after every wash, but now I can stuff 26 diapers in less than 5 minutes. They have held up so wonderfully that I know we will be able to use them with the next little one. :)
