Weeks or Months Old?

So here is a question for all you moms out there...

When you are pregnant, you count how many weeks pregnant you are...like 16, 24, or 41 (In my case - ha ha)...and by the way 40 weeks is actually 10 months, which I am sure all of you  have been pregnant are well aware of, but for those who haven't!

Back to my story...so after the baby is born, do you count them in weeks or months old?? For the first few doctor visits, they schedule them for 2 weeks and 4 weeks out. After that, it is 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, etc.

The reason I ask is because my son was born on September 15th, so technically he would be 5 months old on February 15th...but if you were counting by weeks he would be 22 weeks or 5.5 months! Now I know that this doesn't really matter in the scheme of things, but I just had one of those moments! So I have made up some of my own guidelines...here it goes:

  • 0-3 Months (0 to 12 weeks) the baby's age will be counted in weeks
  • 3-24 Months the baby's age will be counted by months
  • 24 Months+ the babies age will be counted in years
What do you think of my little system?

Have you ever thought about this before?

  1. I think that is about how I do it. Not sure now.

Thanks for stopping by Tots and Me. The girls really love our Muffin Tin Meals. We have been doing them for over a year now. When we were doing Letter of the Week I would focus our tin around the letter, those were my favorite. But I have done, colors, numbers and holidays too. At Muffin Tin Mom she used to do themes and they were fun too. Especially when I tried to fit her theme with my letter of the week.

  2. Julie,

It was great to chat with you on Sunday :)

Ahh, this ages old problem of 40 weeks vs. 10 months :) Jaron wouldn't be technically 5.5 months on the 15th, since each month is about 4.5 weeks long, not 4 :) So 22 weeks is 5 months :)Same with the pregnancy, 40 weeks is not 10 months, but 9, by the time you factor in half a week extra for every month.

Anyway, during the pregnancy I was counting by the week (doing weekly posts in my LJ), but after she was born, it's monthly :) After 2 years either yearly or half-yearly for a while :)

    Hugs,
    Irina

    1. Thanks Irina!I did weekly during pregnancy too! I am even more confused now...ha ha! I think I am just going to start doing months from now on so I don't get confused! I guess you are right that we take an average of weeks in a month, when in fact each month is a little more or less:)

  3. I do months, for instance when someone asks how old my baby is I say 13 months. When I am pregnant I typically say weeks. :)

  4. I usually go by months after the first three or four months. I think your system is pretty close to how I usually say things, as well.

  5. I remember thinking the same thing after my son was born. I definitely like your plan, I am pretty sure that is how I did it. It just goes by so fast, so enjoy every moment.

  6. I don't know about babies but in puppies you track weeks old until they are 16 weeks because by then they have gone to the vet and are fully vaccinated for the year. After that it is months. If you show you track until 18 months because in some cases they can still be in puppy classes and then it is years old.

This would actually make a fun post on my blog now that I think about it.

  9. This post made me laugh! I am not known for my math skills and throughout my pregnancy, I kept running the math thinking wow I am worse in math then I thought! Then when my son was born and people would ask how old he was, I honestly was not sure how to answer due to all the funny math! So I rounded, he is about 5 months in your son's case! :)
